The Swimmers
“The Swimmers” follows synchronized swimming teams from across the country as they engage in training and competition leading up to the national and world championships, from a perspective that sheds light on the relationship between fashion, movement and the human body, as a visual form of communication.
This work sets its sights on the rigid training routines and exemplary order associated with competitive sports, as well as on the manner in which the body is drilled relentlessly to meticulous precision, to collective unity and discipline. Through synchronized motion, uniform dress and group choreography, the swimmers seem to move as a single unit, acting in accordance with a clear set of rules, operating somewhere on the spectrum between aesthetic performance and intense exercise of control, endurance and coordination.
