The Rules of the Game
At the base of this work lies a grid created by a number of overlapping courts from different branches of sports, that when combined constitute a single system encompassing a wide range of different rules. Comparable to a game operating within a fixed structure of rules and regulations, the graphic arrangements presented here are not arbitrary, but rather derive from the rules outlined by the grid.
Through the recurring act of filling various sections of the grid, every resulting image is created as a variant within an established, fixed system: same rules, different manifestations. However, by taking an active decision what to fill and what to leave empty, the user exposes an underlying tension that exists between rule authority and obedience – on the one hand, the choice to operate within the system, and the possibility of deviating from it on the other.
Thus, this body of work essentially does not depict courts or fields, but rather examines the conditions that enable them: a system of rules, borders and decisions where every variation both fulfills and breaks the rule.
